Answers...

  1. Why join Hudson Valley Ski Club; what are the advantages?

Ski Trips.  Weeklong trips are scheduled to Europe and Western States.  Weekend trips  are scheduled to Vermont and Upstate New York.  Day trips are often scheduled to local ski areas.

Some years the Club leases a Ski Lodge in Central Vermont for the ski season (those years the Lodge is usually a short drive to Killington or Okemo Mountain).  For a very modest fee members can find accommodations at the Lodge.
The decision as to whether or not to have a lodge is based on the membership desire to have and demonstrating the choice to use the lodge. This year the decision was to not have a Lodge.  Members should let  the Board of Directors know how you feel.

Free ski instruction is offered for beginner and intermediate skiers up to parallel skiing. This free instruction is offered on day trips to local ski areas  and on weekend trips to Vermont and Upstate New York.  For new skiers  this is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to ski.

Ski lift tickets.   Each year the Club purchases ski lift tickets in quantity at discount prices and sells them to Club members.  As a member of the New Jersey Ski Council with thousands of members the buying power can result in substantial discounts.

Other "off-snow" events include Spring and Fall Dances, Winter Holiday Party, Tennis Nights, Sing-a-Longs and numerous Summer Activities.

Information about upcoming events is listed on both the website (on the Events Page) and on the monthy Newsletter available to members (both online and by mail) and on the Club Voice Message service (845-227-1123).

  2. Where are meetings held; how do I get there?

HVSC meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at the Best Western Hotel on Route 9, Poughkeepsie, New York.  Meetings start at 7:30 PM sharp (8:00 PM during the summer).

    Driving Directions to Best Western:
The Best Western Inn and Conference Center is located on Route 9, 4 miles south of Mid-Hudson Bridge, 9 miles north of Interstate 84, Route 9 Interchange.

  3. How can I get the names and phone numbers of members of HVSC?

HVSC does distribute a membership directory of officers and members of the Club to members (there are both printed copies and online in a "members-only" portion of the website), but in the interest of privacy that information is not publicily available on the Internet.   Some members have chosen to serve as information contacts (see Information Contacts) and some have chosen to have their names, numbers, e-mail addresses and in some cases Home Pages listed (see Member Links).

  4. What is the "Flash Box" and why have it?

The "Flash Box" (on the Home Page) is to inform you which pages have most recently been updated, so that frequent viewers of the HVSC Home Page need not go to all pages to see if they've seen the most recent.  Also because many  Internet browsers show the last stored page (even though the page might have updated since you last accessed it),  the "Flash Box" will allow you to insure you are looking at the current version.  If the date on the page does not agree with the date in the "Flash Box",  press the "Reload" button of your browser.

  5. What is "Race Training"?

"Race Training" is HVSC's term for happy hour.  Some people  also refer to this as "skiing Mahogony Ridge."  Every Friday night the Club members meet at an area lounge's happy hour for a couple of hours of friendly conversation.

The locations and dates for upcoming "Race Training" is listed on both the website (on the Events Page) and on the monthy Newsletter available to members (both online and by mail) and on the Club Voice Message service (845-227-1123).  Please join us.

  6. Why, if HVSC is a "ski club", are most of the pictures in the Gallery of parties?

Actually MOST of the events represented in the Photograph Gallery ARE Ski Trips; it might just seem like more are off-snow events, ie, dances and parties.  I suspect the off-snow events might just lend themselves to photo oppertunities (and people are less bundled up, so faces are more visible).  I must admit that even the pictures of Ski Trips include many off-snow scenes, probably for the same reasons.

Having said all that, the real reason the pictures which appear in the Gallery were chosen, is that those were the pictures which have been submitted to me.  So, dear member, if you'd like more pictures of Ski Trips to appear, take the pictures and let me borrow them so I can include them.
[It almost seemed frivilous to include this question, but it has been asked a number of times.]

  7. How do I control the music playing on some of the pages?

Several of the pages (including the Home Page, Events Page and Ski Trips Page) have music playing when the page is loaded.  Most people has commented favorably on the music, but if you want to exercise some control, there are options.

All music uses "midi" format files and music will play using whatever software is associated with the file-type "mid".
Any page which has music will have a "control box" at the bottom of the screen .

The appearance of  the control box will vary with different software, but most will have buttons to start, stop, and pause the playing.  Most players also have a "slider" to let you move around the piece being played.  Additional controls can usually be found by clicking the right mouse button and then selecting "Properties".   There you might find volume controls, repeat, continuous play, etc.

I usually set the pages to automatically start with the volume at a nominal level and the piece to only play once.  Some players honor these settings; some don't.  The bad news is that when you reload a page, the music will restart even if the page is in cache. Fortunately the volume setting is usually honored.

If you don't want the music to play, you can either set the volume in your player to minimum (or "mute" if your player allows that).

OR you can set your system "Volume Controls".
In Windows left-click on the speaker icon on your system tray and adjust the Volume or hit the "mute" button.  Realize that this will effect ALL sound on your system.  To exercise finer control on sound (eg. mute music, but still hear system messages) right-click on the speaker icon on your system tray and adjust the Volume controls or hit the "mute" button for individual sound types.
